The countdown to UFC 81 has begun, and the hype is deafening.
Fans are anxiously awaiting the UFC debut of former WWE star Brock Lesnar who will be squaring off against Frank Mir.
The Mir / Lesnar match-up is one half of the double main event. The other half is Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira against Tim Sylvia. Bodog currently has these two events available for betting on their site; as the event draws closer, expect them to put up odds for most of the undercard bouts.
Brock Lesnar (-150) vs Frank Mir (+120) - Brock Lesnar started off as a BIG favorite in this fight, however people have been hammering away at the line and putting down some major dollars on Frank Mir. The overriding sentiment in the MMA community is - what has Lesnar really proved? Sure, he used to be a decorated wrestler and WWE star, but that doesn't necessarily translate well to the Octagon. Lesnar is a monster to be sure, however several boxers in the past have tried to make the leap to Mixed Martial Arts and failed dramatically. Will a former wrestler be any different?
Brock Lesnar is long on hype and short on experience. He has a 1-0-0 record in Mixed Martial Arts fighting with his lone victory coming against Min Soo Kim at K-1 Hero's - Dynamite!! USA via a tapout due to strikes. He is extremely big (6'2, 245) and has a strong wrestler background. However, against his first truly tough opponent, how will he fare? Avid bettors of UFC events have been asking themselves the same question, which is why Mir has seen significant money being bet on him due to Lesnar's inexperience.
Mir on the other hand has a record of 10-3-0, with six of his victories coming via submission. He is 6'1, 240 pounds and fights in a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu style. Mir will not want to get into a striking battle with Lesnar, as he will not win that way. His best hope will be to trap the inexperienced Lesnar in a submission and force the big man to tap.
Mir's last fight was a 1st round victory against Antoni Hardonk at UFC 74 - Respect. This fight overall is hard to call due to this being Lesnar's first fight in the UFC and second MMA fight overall.
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (-180) vs Tim Sylvia (+150)
Tim "Maine-iac" Sylvia will be putting up his pristine 24-3-0 record against the 30-4-1 record of Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira in the co-headlining event at UFC 81.
Nogueira is the favorite in this fight as he is currently listed at -180, meaning you would need to wager $180 to win $100 in profit. I mean, you really can't dispute the fact that Nogueira should be the favorite in this fight. Let's look at some of the opponents that he has battled in the past:
-victory against Fabricio Werdum at PRIDE - Critical Countdown Absolute
-unanimous decision loss against Fedor Emelianenko at PRIDE - Shockwave 2004
-unanimous decision loss against Fedor Emelianenko at PRIDE 24 - Body Blow
-victory against Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic at PRIDE - Final Conflict 2003
-multiple victories against Dan Henderson
He has fought arguably the best fight in the world (Fedor Emelianenko) THREE times, and went to a decision twice (third fight was a no contest due to an accidental cut). That alone is enough to see Nogueira favored in this match. Who else can say that?
Nogueira is 6-3, 231 pounds and battles in a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu style. He will give Sylvia an extremely tough match.
Tim Sylvia, as mentioned, is an impressive 24-3-0, with 16 of his victories coming via TKO. He is extremely tall (6'8) and weighs 260 pounds. This should be an extremely interesting match-up between two distinct styles.
Sylvia's last match was a unanimous decision win against Brandon Vera at UFC 77 - Hostile Territory. Before that, Sylvia battled Randy Couture at UFC 68, where he lost by unanimous decision. Sylvia himself has fought an impressive list of fighters, including Randy Couture and Frank Mir. This should be a very interesting battle and is almost too close to call.
