UFC 84 Card Starting to Take Shape

 |

The UFC has been putting on a number of really good cards as of late. One month after the UFC 83 event in Montreal that will be headlined by Georges St. Pierre vs Matt Serra, the UFC will come back with their UFC 84 card which will be headlined by the much-anticipated bout between B.J. Penn vs Sean Sherk.
Also, as we mentioned a few days ago, UFC 84 will be the last bout for Tito Ortiz before he "retires" from the UFC. Ortiz will be taking on undefeated Lyoto Machida before he permanently departs from the "Octagon".
Other matches that have been announced for UFC 84 include:
Rashad Evans vs Thiago Silva
Wilson Gouveia vs Goran Reljic
Rousimar Palhares vs Ivan Salaverry
As mentioned, the main event of UFC 84 will feature Sean Sherk battling against B.J. Penn for the UFC lightweight championship. Sherk was stripped of the title in December 2007 after testing positive for steroid. Sherk will be battling B.J. Penn, who won the lightweight championship against Joe Stevenson at UFC 80, will be facing Sherk as part of a mandatory defense after Sherk was stripped of the title.
These two do not like each other and have been embroiled in a war of words.
Sean "The Muscle Shark" Sherk currently has a record of 32-2-1, with 13 of his victories coming via submissions and 11 coming via decisions. His last fight was a unanimous decision victory against Hermes Franca at UFC 73 - Stacked. Sherk has beaten some impressive foes over his career, including Nick Diaz and Kenny Florian. His two losses came against Georges St. Pierre at UFC 56 - Full Force and Matt Hughes at UFC 42 - Sudden Impact.
B.J. Penn currently has a lifetime record of 12-4-1 in Mixed Martial Arts fighting. His last victory was the aforementioned bout against Joe Stevenson at UFC 80 - Rapid Fire for the lightweight title. Before that, he fought against Jens Pulver in the Ultimate Fighter 5 finale and won via rear naked choke. Before that, Penn lost to Matt Hughes via TKO and Georges St. Pierre via split decision.
This should be a tremendous bout. There are no currently posted odds for this fight as of yet. It will be interesting to see whether or not Sherk can shrug off almost 10 months worth of ring rust when the two finally fight in May.
