Cung Le The Next Big Thing in MMA?

 |

It's pretty easy to get overly carried away, branding everyone who wins a big match as the "Next Big Thing". However, when you watch Cung Le fight, you can't help but think that he has an incredibly bright future in the world of Mixed Martial Arts even though he is 35 years old.
Last night Cung Le faced his biggest test in the world of professional mixed martial arts fighting when he took on Frank Shamrock at "Strikeforce - Shamrock vs Le" for the Strikeforce Middleweight Championship belt. Everyone had been speculating that Le had been fighting pushovers in his first five professional MMA fights and that Shamrock would easily beat the outmatched Le. Las Vegas had Cung Le as a +175 underdog. Many people figured that Shamrock's experience (he has fought opponents such as Tito Ortiz and Jeremy Horn) would give him a big edge in this match-up.
What people forgot is that when you include his San Shou professional fights and his K-1 fights, Cung Le had a combined record of 20-0. Suddenly Cung Le had much more experience and it showed in his fight against Shamrock.
Shamrock eventually succumbed to Cung Le's wilting offensive attack. Shamrock couldn't make it out past the third round after Cung Le broke Shamrock's arm. Cung Le has one of the most complete offensive stand-up packages that I have ever seen, and I'm not surprised that his kicks broke Shamrock's arm. Some people are wondering about Cung Le's ground game - we will surely find out when he defends his middleweight title in the future.
Cung le now has a professional MMA record of 6-0-0 and holds the Strikeforce Middleweight Title. He has won every MMA fight via knockout, with the Shamrock fight being his longest ever Strikeforce battle. This should put an end to the idea that Cung Le wouldn't be able to hang against stronger opponents.
Cung Le's electrifying fighting style makes him an instant hit with fans. Expect his fan base to continue to grow as he fights tougher and tougher opponents and solidifies his spot as one of Mixed Martial Art's up and coming stars.
