James Irvin Rumored to Replace Chuck Liddell at UFC 85; Michael Bisping vs Chris Leben the New Main Event?

 |

Apparently Chuck Liddell's injury isn't as bad as was previously reported. First reports had Liddell "completely" tearing his hamstring muscle - apparently the injury isn't as that serious, as Liddell "partially" tore the muscle and won't require any surgery. Liddell hopes to be fighting again by August.
So who is going to fill the void left by Liddell?
Apparently James "Sandman" Irvin has verbally agreed to take Liddell's spot against the undefeated Rashad Evans. Irvin currently has a professional MMA record of 14-4-0, with ten of those victories coming via knockout. His last fight was a ridiculously short knockout victory against Houston Alexander that tied the UFC record for fastest ever knockout (eight seconds). This short fight is the reason way Irvin would be able to take the Evans fight on such short notice.
This will be a suitable replacement fight, however it is not main event material.
The UFC is going to shift the Irvin / Evans match to the undercard, and rumor has it that they will be booking a Michael Bisping - Chris Leben fight for the main event. Having Michael Bisping in the main event would certainly make sense, considering that Bisping was born on a British military base in Cyprus and moved to England when he was just a kid. The UFC quickly learned after UFC 83 that the best way to get a crowd pumped for a card is to have some homegrown talent in the main event.
Bisping currently sports a record of 16-1-0, with his single loss coming against Rashad Evans at UFC 78 - Validation. He won The Ultimate Fighter 3 light heavyweight contest by scoring a victory over Josh Haynes. He also has victories against Matt Hamill, Charles McCarthy and Elvis Sinosic.
Chris "The Crippler" Leben will be an interesting test for Bisping. Leben has a record of 18-4-0, with ten of his victories coming via knockout. He has victories over Mike Swick, Patrick Cote and Alessio Sakara in his career.
Again, these are just rumors, but this is what we are hearing. The UFC have said that they play on loading up the UFC 85 card with plenty of great matches, and this would be a welcome addition to the card.
