Kenny Florian vs Roger Huerta Confirmed for UFC 87

 |

UFC 87 is scheduled to take place on August 9th in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Brock Lesnar vs Mark Coleman was the first match that was announced for the card and will likely be the main event.
Another match looks to be on the verge of being signed, as representatives from the camps of Kenny Florian and Roger Huerta have both verbally agreed to a fight on the August 9th card. While the match has not yet been officially signed and announced by the UFC, it seems to be just a matter of time.
This will be an extremely important match in the careers of both Florian and Huerta. Whoever wins this match-up will be the next in line to fight for the Lightweight title, assuming that B.J. Penn beats Sean Sherk at UFC 84. Florian has fought for the lightweight title before and will be looking for a second chance. Huerta has never fought for the title, and will be eager to earn his first major title shot in the UFC.
While Brock Lesnar vs Mark Coleman may be the main event of the card, the Florian / Huerta fight will undoubtedly be the best fight on the card, especially for pure MMA enthusiasts. Florian and Huerta are both spectacular fighters, and both believe that they can take the lightweight title from B.J. Penn. The winner of this fight will get a shot against the winner of the B.J. Penn / Sean Sherk match, while the loser will have to fight his way back up the lightweight ladder.
Kenny "KenFlo" Florian enters this match-up with a 9-3-0 professional record. He has won his last four fights in a row, with his most recent victory being an impressive second round knockout against Joe Lauzon at UFC - Fight Night 13. His last loss was a unanimous decision defeat against Sean Sherk at UFC 64 - Unstoppable. Florian seems to be getting more and more confident with each passing fight, and has won 7 of his past eight battles in the Octagon (his loss against Sherk is tainted as well, due to Sherk's steroid use).
Roger "El Matador" Huerta will bring his near-perfect 20-1-1 record into this fight. Huerta has an amazing story, having endured abusive parents and extreme poverty while growing up. Ten of Huerta's 20 victories have come via knockout, with another four coming via submission. His lone loss came against Ryan Schultz in June of 2004 - since then, Huerta has gone on an incredible winning streak, with his most recent victory coming against Clay Guida in the Ultimate Fighter 6 Finale. Huerta is an extremely impressive fighter, and this match-up should be a classic.
Huerta will likely have the "home-town" advantage as he currently lives in Minnesota. UFC 87 is shaping up to be another stacked card.
