Thiago Alves Misses Weight For Fight Against Matt Hughes

Thiago "Pitbull" Alves, on the eve of his biggest fight ever, missed weight for his main event match-up against Matt Hughes at UFC 85: Bedlam.

The event, which has been beset by numerous injuries that have forced the UFC to completely re-do the card from the top-down, now has another black eye - one of the participants in the main event of the card (Thiago Alves) missed making weight by an unbelievable four pounds. He wasn't even close to making weight for this fight, and you just know that regardless of the outcome of this match, Dana White is not going to be happy with Alves, and it will likely negatively impact his career.

Matt Hughes made weight of 170 pounds and has agreed to fight at a catchweight of 174 pounds. It is unknown whether or not Alves will be giving up any of his purse due to not making weight.

In February of 2007, Thiago Alves was suspended for eight months and fined $5,500 after it was discovered that he had used a diuretic called Spironolactone to make weight for his UFC 66 fight against Tony DeSouza.

How many chances will Alves get? This is the second time that he has embarrassed himself and the UFC. Alves is an extremely promising and talented welterweight fighter, but if he manages to beat Matt Hughes this weekend, do you think that Dana White will be eager to put him into another big match anytime soon? The biggest match of his career and he misses weight by a full four pounds. That's unacceptable. If you don't think that you will be able to make weight, then don't take the fight. This is exactly the kind of last-minute black-eye that the UFC did not want heading into UFC 85: Bedlam - they've already had more than enough problems with this event.

If Alves loses his match-up against Hughes, I suspect that he may be buried or even let go from the promotion.

You have to think that the UFC can't wait for this event to be done with, so that they can wash their hands of it. UFC 85: Bedlam has been nothing but problems from the beginning.
