Nick Diaz, Muhsin Corbbrey Continue Trend of Fighters Missing Weight
 |

What's with all of these fighters missing weight recently?
Selina Wong at Fighters.com is reporting this morning that Nick Diaz and Muhsin Corbbrey BOTH missed weight for their fight against each other at EliteXC: "Return of the King". This fight is slated to take place in Honolulu, Hawaii on Saturday.
The two fighters were slated to fight at the 160 pound limit. Muhsin Corbbrey weighed in at 163.5 pounds, missing weight by a full 3 1/2 pounds.
Here's the unbelievable part: Nick Diaz missed making weight by an alarming nine pounds. Nine pounds?!
According to the article, Diaz was aware that he wouldn't make weight and contacted both EliteXC and Muhsin Corbbrey's camp. Diaz agreed to give Corbbrey a portion of his purse for the fight, and the two fighters agreed to fight at 168 pounds.
This continues the recent trend of fighters missing weight in high profile MMA events.
Gina "Conviction" Carano missed weight for her fight against Kaitlin Young in the first edition of EliteXC "Saturday Night Fights" on CBS.
Thiago "Pitbull" Alves missed weight for his fight against Matt Hughes in the main event of UFC 85: "Bedlam". Many fight fans have pointed out that Alves looked noticeably bigger than Hughes in their fight, and that this size advantage may have been a contributing factor to Hughes being stopped early in the second round.
For some reason, whenever somebody misses weight, the apologists always seem to come out. Carano missed weight because she had just finished filming "American Gladiator", and it was unfair to assume that she would be able to make weight in time for the fight. Alves has a history of having trouble making weight, but he is an incredible talent so we should cut him some slack.
Give me a break!
If you don't think that you can make weight, then don't take a fight. Move up a weight class. But don't disappoint your fans, and fans of mixed martial arts, by not making weight for your fights. It is disrespectful to fans, and disrespectful to your opponent. How can someone like Nick Diaz miss weight by a full nine pounds? He obviously didn't take this fight seriously.
There is no excuse for this. You can't call yourself a professional fighter if you can't make weight for a major fight.
