Our Picks and Predictions for UFC 87: Seek and Destroy

So far we are a ridiculous 8-1 when it comes to picking fights on this site. Ridiculous in that it will never continue, and I fully expect that we are going to get smacked in one of these upcoming events.

Anyways, UFC 87: Seek and Destroy is taking place on August 9th at the Target Center in Minnesota. The show will be headlined by Georges St. Pierre vs Jon Fitch for the Welterweight title, and Brock Lesnar vs Heath Herring in a heavyweight tilt.

Bodog currently has odds up for three of the fights, so we are going to stick with those. Here are our picks and predictions for the upcoming UFC 87 card:

Kenny Florian (-155) vs Roger Huerta (+125) - the winner of this fight is supposed to get a shot at B.J. Penn's lightweight title. Penn has already indicated that he intends to move up to Welterweight to fight the winner of the St. Pierre / Fitch fight, so Florian and Huerta may just be fighting for a chance to battle for the vacant Lightweight title. Penn has indicated that he isn't too excited about a potential bout against either Huerta or Florian.

Florian currently possesses a professional record of 9-3-0, and is coming off of strong performances against Joe Lauzon at UFC - Fight Night 13 and Din Thomas at UFC - Fight Night 11. Huerta brings a record of 25-1-1 into this fight, but looked less than impressive in his third round knockout victory against Clay Guida at TUF 6 finale.

Both fighters are very tough guys, and this should be a war. I think that Florian takes this fight after he rains elbows on Huerta's head. Florian via stoppage.

Brock Lesnar (-270) vs Heath Herring (+210) - There is no doubt about it, Lesnar is an absolute freak of nature. Incredibly strong, quick and agile. He will also be fighting in front of a friendly crowd. Lesnar is listed as a big favorite, but I'm going against the crowd and taking Herring in this fight. Herring has a ton of experience, having been involved in 41 professional MMA fights. You just can't discount experience, especially when up against a raw talent like Brock Lesnar. I'm sure that Lesnar is training his ass off for this fight, but nothing can take the place of real-fight experience, and Lesnar just doesn't have that yet. Herring has fought a lot of great fighters during his career, including Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Fedor Emelianenko. If Herring can go toe-to-toe with these two and take the worst that they've got, then he can certainly hold his own (and then some) against Lesnar. Herring has 16 submission victories during his career, so look for him to try and catch Lesnar by surprise, just like Frank Mir did. There are just too many questions surrounding Lesnar right now - the value is definitely in taking Herring. -270 for an unproven fighter with just 2 1/2 minutes of actual fight experience? Against a guy with an absolute wealth of experience inside the Octagon? I'm taking Herring by submission.

Georges St. Pierre (-340) vs Jon Fitch (+260). Jon Fitch is a great, great fighter. There is a reason why he is the number two ranked Welterweight in the world. However, there is also a reason why St. Pierre is the number one ranked Welterweight in the world. He is just a bit better than Fitch in just about every aspect of their games. There is too much on the line for St. Pierre in this fight - do you really see him dropping the title so soon after re-claiming it, especially with the prospect of a big-money match against B.J. Penn right around the corner? Neither do I. This fight might go the distance, but expect St. Pierre to outclass his opponent and win via unanimous decision. I'm taking Georges St. Pierre.

So in closing, I'm taking an underdog (Herring), a big favorite (St. Pierre) and a moderate favorite (Florian).
