Is Anderson Silva Still the Top P4P Fighter In the World?
 |

Before UFC 90, Anderson "The Spider" Silva was widely considered to be the top pound-for-pound MMA fighter in the world.
However, after Saturday nights "interesting" performance against Patrick Cote, many people in the online MMA community are starting to re-evaluate Silva's position on their top P4P list.
Some people are of the opinion that Silva still deserves to be on top of the list. They point out that Silva has still never been challenged in his eight UFC fights, ripping through competition that includes the likes of Rich Franklin, Dan Henderson and Chris Leben. They also point out that Silva was never in danger against Cote, and that "The Spider" was likely going to take Cote apart in the later rounds of their fight.
Some people are saying that Silva deserves to be knocked down a few spots due to the fact that he didn't engage an obviously inferior opponent and danced around for two rounds. They point out that the other fighters at the top of the P4P list would never let a lesser opponent hang around for that long.
Some feel that Fedor deserves to be at the top of the list. They point to his impressive record (28-1-0) against mostly top-notch talent (Nogueira, Cro-Cop, Lindland). They also point to his 36 second destruction of Tim Sylvia as clear evidence that Fedor is far and away the top fighter in the world today, in any weight class. Those opposed to seeing Fedor at the top of their list normally point to his sub-standard level of competition over the past few years (such as Hong Man Choi).
Most people have either Silva or Fedor at the top of their lists. You can also easily make a case for Georges St. Pierre, who currently holds the Welterweight title and has savagely avenged both of his career losses. St. Pierre constantly shows that he is likely the most complete fighter in the world today. You would have to think that a decisive victory over BJ Penn would propel St. Pierre to the top of many lists.
You can also make a case for BJ Penn or Urijah Faber as the top P4P fighter in the world.
It will be interesting to see where Silva goes from here after his disappointing performance at UFC 90.
With Fedor slated to fight Arlovski, Penn and St. Pierre set to fight each other and Silva likely to fight again before the end of the year, there could be plenty of changes in the top P4P discussion over the next few months. I think that most people still have Silva at the top of their lists, butthere is definitely a great deal more debate after Saturday night.
