UFC 92 Will Likely Be the Biggest PPV of 2008

Everyone is talking about the UFC 91 event that is just a few weeks away. It's hard not to talk about it, as the main event will feature Randy Couture vs Brock Lesnar for the UFC Heavyweight title. How will Couture fare against the much bigger Brock Lesnar? Can Lesnar actually win the UFC heavyweight title in just his fourth professional fight? How much ring rust will Randy Couture have after a lengthy absence from the Octagon? There are many compelling storylines woven into the main event for UFC 91, and it should not be surprising to anyone that this event may set the all-time PPV buy record.

You take away the Lesnar/Couture fight though, and the card suddenly doesn't look as good. Gonzaga vs Hendricks. Stevenson vs Florian. Maia vs Quarry. All solid fights with the Stevenson/Florian fight likely to be the best of the three. However, I don't think that you could call any of these fights co-main event material. The UFC realized that most everyone will be buying this PPV for the Lesnar/Couture fight, so they decided to hold off some of the bigger fights (such as Silva/Jackson) for future PPVs. Not a bad move, considering that everyone will be buying this PPV just to see Lesnar/Couture.

Now compare UFC 92 to UFC 91. UFC 92 is easily the most stacked card of 2008, and it's not even close. There are three fights on that card that could easily headline any PPV.

First you have Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs Frank Mir in the co-main event for the UFC interim heavyweight title. The winner of this fight will move on to face the winner of Couture/Lesnar in early 2009 to unify the two UFC heavyweight titles.

Then you have Forrest Griffin making his first light heavyweight title defense against the surging Rashad Evans. Evans is coming off of a stunning knockout victory against Chuck Liddell, and Forrest Griffin is one of the UFC's most exciting and popular fighters.

As if that wasn't enough, you will also have Quinton Jackson vs Wanderlei Silva for the third time. This will be Jackson's first fight since dropping the light heavyweight title to Forrest Griffin in the summer. Silva is coming off of a quick knockout of Keith Jardine, and will be looking to beat Jackson for the third time in his career. There is a TREMENDOUS amount on the line for both fighters in this tilt, with the winner of the fight very likely getting the next shot at the light heavyweight title.

The card will also feature Yushin Okami vs Dean Lister, Matt Hamill vs Reese Andy and Mustapha Al-Turk vs Cheick Kongo. Just an absolutely stacked card.

UFC 91 is the card that everyone is talking about due to the Lesnar/Couture fight, but don't sleep on UFC 92 - it will very likely be the PPV of the year, potentially topping UFC 84 (which will be no small feat).
