Georges St. Pierre vs Anderson Silva at UFC 100?

UFC 100 will undoubtedly be an epic event. Fans of mixed martial arts fighting are already starting to whisper about the possible fights that may take place on this card. Dana White is a masterful promoter, and he surely won't miss out on this huge opportunity for his promotion. I can guarantee you that the UFC will stack this card from top to bottom. The event will likely take place during the summer of 2009. UFC 100 will come after a string of "mega" events for the promotion, so they will likely feel the need to go above and beyond to satisfy their rabid fans.

So what might the UFC have in mind for this event? What fights could possibly match the hype that the UFC 100 event is surely to bring?

I'm speculating just like everyone else, but here are some possibilities:

1. Georges St. Pierre vs Anderson "The Spider" Silva for the Middleweight title. Assuming that Georges St. Pierre gets past B.J. Penn at UFC 94, this fight would seemingly make the most sense to me as a co-main event fight for this card. Georges St. Pierre has publicly said that he wishes to move up a division. Anderson Silva is begging for some worthwhile competition. This fight makes sense for a number of reasons, and Dana White has also mentioned the possibility of such a fight in passing. Silva can not move down to Welterweight, so Georges St. Pierre would need to move up. I can't see either one of these fighters turning this match down, which would set the stage for one of the most-hyped battles in the history of mixed martial arts.

2. Champion vs Champion for the heavyweight title. Could the UFC actually hold this fight back for that long? It's a possibility - the odds of this happening greatly increase if Brock Lesnar wins the title from Randy Couture at UFC 91. The UFC will desperately want to have Brock Lesnar fighting on UFC 100 to increase the number of PPV buys. If Lesnar defeats Couture later this month, then I think that Dana White and company may hold off on the Lesnar vs Mir/Nogueira fight until UFC 100. If Couture wins at UFC 91, then the UFC will almost certainly have the heavyweight unification title fight before the summer.

3. Couture vs Fedor? Very, very unlikely to happen. Affliction would need to fold and Couture would need to drop the heavyweight title to Lesnar for this to happen. Fedor Emelianenko simply won't agree to a long-term deal with the UFC, and Dana White will not risk bringing Fedor in for a one-off fight against his heavyweight champion. What would happen for the UFC is Fedor swooped in, beat up on Couture, won the heavyweight title and then left the promotion? Disaster. I could see Dana White agreeing to bring in Fedor for a "mega" fight against Couture if Randy had already dropped the title to Lesnar. Couture can't fight forever, and a fight against Fedor would certainly make the UFC a ton of money. Having said that, this scenario is very unlikely, so don't get your hopes up.

4. Forrest Griffin vs Silva/Jackson. The UFC will certainly want to have one of their most popular fighters on this card - a fighter who was instrumental in bringing the UFC to the masses. Ideally Forrest Griffin would still be the light heavyweight champion at this time - regardless, he will still be on this card. The winner of the Wanderlei Silva/Quinton Jackson fight at UFC 92 will very likely get the next shot at the light heavyweight title. If Griffin still holds the LHW title after UFC 92, then he can defend against the winner of Silva/Jackson at UFC 100. If he loses, then he can take on the loser of Silva/Jackson. Either way, it will be a fun fight, and the timing seems to work out.

5. Gina Carano/Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos. Dana White has publicly stated that he doesn't wish to build a Women's division in his promotion. How about signing Carano and Santos to a one-fight deal for UFC 100? The fight has plenty of buzz already, and Carano has become one of the biggest names in the sport. This fight would draw plenty of mainstream attention for the UFC. Carano has shown herself to be extremely capable in promotional appearances. I'm not sure if Dana White wants to go this route, but this move would certainly make a lot of business sense. Both fighters are free agents as far as I know.

Five scenarios. One very likely (#4), two somewhat likely (#1 and #2), one might happen (#5) and one almost certainly won't happen (#3).
