Silva vs. St. Pierre at UFC 100?

UFC 100 is quickly approaching, with the event most likely to take place in July.

People have been speculating for months as to what the main event could possibly be. Given that it will be the UFC's 100th show, you can bet that Dana White and company will want to give their fans an extra-special show that includes a major "money" match-up in the main event.

Georges St. Pierre vs Anderson Silva makes sense for a number of reasons.

First off, it would be a dream match-up for many fans, and help to answer the question of who is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. You would be hard-pressed to find a list of the top pound-for-pound MMA fighters in the world that didn't include Silva and St. Pierre in the top five.

Second, you are giving Silva a match-up that will finally interest him. Silva has been intensely bored with his competition as of late, and this came to a head in his match against Patrick Cote. Silva is a champion and wants to fight the best of the best.

Third, Dana White has already hinted about a possible match-up between the two.

There are not too many other potential match-ups that really make sense for UFC 100.

Liddell vs Couture 4 (if it happens) might make sense, but these two are likely going to fight at UFC 99, if they fight at all. Besides, while definitely a big fight, would Liddell/Couture 4 be big enough to headline UFC 100?

Brock Lesnar vs Mir/Nogueira? Is the UFC going to make Brock Lesnar go eight months between fights? No way.

Brock Lesnar vs Couture II? This would be a big fight, however Couture will need to fight again before being given another shot against Lesnar. You'd also be asking Lesnar to fight Mir/Nog in the spring and then fight again in July, which is probably too much to ask.

What other fights would potentially be big enough to headline this epic card? I can't think of any.

Assuming that St. Pierre beats B.J. Penn at UFC 94 (definitely not a given), the timeline seems to work out. Anderson Silva is slated to fight at UFC 95, which would give both fighters more than enough time to train for the fight.

If St. Pierre loses to Penn, then I'm not sure what the UFC would do for UFC 100. St. Pierre vs Silva would make sense for a number of reasons, however the fight would likely be contingent on St. Pierre successfully defending against Penn at UFC 94.
