Cain Velasquez Pulled From UFC 207 CardPublished on December 24th, 2016 8:47 pm EST
Earlier tonight, word leaked out that the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) declared that Cain Velasquez was medically unfit to fight. For that reason, Velasquez is officially out of his fight against Fabricio Werdum at UFC 207.
Earlier this week, Velasquez revealed that he was having significant issues with his back and that he would be needing surgery after UFC 207 to remedy the issue. Velasquez revealed at the time that he was feeling better and was certain that he would be medically cleared to fight.
Even after receiving medical clearance from his doctor, Velasquez was told by the NAC that he was being deemed medically unfit to fight this coming Friday at UFC 207. Velasquez was reportedly surprised by the news, as he figured that he would be given the green light after getting clearance from his doctor.
According to reports, the UFC will not be trying to find a replacement opponent for Fabricio Werdum.
Instead, the card will proceed with a total of 10 fights, with the main card likely looking like this:
Amanda Nunes vs Ronda Rousey
Dominick Cruz vs Cody Garbrandt
TJ Dillashaw vs John Lineker
Louis Smolka vs Ray Borg
Johny Hendricks vs Neil Magny
This is also a chance that Dong Hyun Kim vs Tarec Saffiedine gets bumped up to the main card in the place of Hendricks vs Magny.
This news is obviously terrible news for Velasquez, who appeared to be on a straight line towards getting another shot at the Heavyweight title.
Velasquez has had numerous injuries over the course of his career, and it will be interesting to see how much his career suffers as a result of this latest back injury.
There is no word as to what the UFC plans on doing with Fabricio Werdum next.
