Globo: Werdum vs Rothwell Set For UFC 211Published on February 8th, 2017 1:25 am EST
According to multiple media reports, Fabricio Werdum vs Ben Rothwell has been added to UFC 211, which is set to take place at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas on May 13th, 2017.
This fight makes a great deal of sense for this card, as the UFC likes to put on a fight in the same division as the main event fight, just in case one of the main event participants needs to pull out due to injury.
The main event of UFC 211 will see Stipe Miocic take on Junior dos Santos for the Heavyweight title, so you can safely assume that Werdum or Rothwell (very likely Werdum) would get the first shot if either Miocic or dos Santos needs to pull out due to injury.
Fabricio Werdum is coming off of a fairly uninspiring win over Travis Browne in September of 2016. Werdum, who has said that he is nearing retirement, would obviously like to make one final run for the Heavyweight title before he hangs it up, and a win over Rothwell would be imperative towards doing so.
Ben Rothwell, on the other hand, is coming off of a loss to Junior dos Santos in April of 2016, and would love to score a win over Werdum, who is widely considered one of the top Heavyweight fighters of all time.
Fabricio Werdum was supposed to fight Cain Velasquez in December, though Velasquez was pulled from the card at the last minute due to some lingering injury concerns. With Velasquez still on the sidelines, Werdum decided to take another fight instead.
Werdum will clearly be the favorite in this fight, as he is likely better than Rothwell in practically every aspect of their games. Rothwell has been known to score a shocking upset or two in his time, so don't sleep on him going into this fight.
Werdum vs Rothwell should be a great third or fourth fight on the main card.
