Winner of Fight To Get Welterweight Title ShotPublished on February 9th, 2017 2:42 pm EST
Bellator announced earlier today that former UFC Welterweight title contender Rory MacDonald will be making his promotional debut on Friday, May 19th against Paul Daley. The fight will take place in London, England.
Bellator also revealed that the winner of the fight will get the next Welterweight title shot.
Rory MacDonald, who is still just 27 years of age, is likely the biggest free agent signing that Bellator has landed so far. MacDonald, who came within one round of winning the Welterweight title from Robbie Lawler at UFC 189, left the UFC after expressing frustration with the amount of compensation that he was receiving.
MacDonald's negotiating power was muted after he suffered two straight losses to close out his time in the UFC, though he lost to two exceptionally talented opponents (Stephen Thompson and Robbie Lawler). Bellator made MacDonald a deal, the UFC declined to match and the Canadian star moved to Bellator.
Paul Daley, on the other hand, is coming off of a spectacular knockout victory over Brennan Ward at Bellator 170. Daley, who is likely best known for his cheap shot on Josh Koscheck, has compiled an impressive 4-1 record since joining Bellator in early 2015.
Daley is known for his spectacular knockout power, though he will have a very hard time dealing with the well-rounded game that is possessed by Rory MacDonald. I would probably expect this fight to go the same way that the Daley/Koscheck fight went - Daley will be grounded by an opponent with superior wrestling and his power will be taken away from him.
Competition is a great thing, and Bellator putting on a fight of this caliber is very good for the industry in general.
