Stacked Card Gets Another Big Fight in Alvarez vs Poirier

After a bit of public campaigning, Dustin Poirier finally got his wish earlier today after the UFC made Eddie Alvarez vs Poirier official for UFC 211. This event will take place at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas on May 13th, 2017.

The main card for UFC 211 already contains two big title fights, as Stipe Miocic is set to defend against Junior dos Santos, while Joanna Jedrzejczyk will look to defend her Strawweight title against Jessica Andrade.

Here is how the main card looks as of this moment:

Stipe Miocic vs Junior dos Santos
Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs Jessica Andrade
Demian Maia vs Jorge Masvidal
Eddie Alvarez vs Dustin Poirier
Fabricio Werdum vs Ben Rothwell

That is an absolutely tremendous card - easily one of the pound-for-pound top cards of the year, provided that it stays together. In addition to the two title fights, you have three additional fights with title implications. Demian Maia could lock up a title shot with a victory, while both Alvarez and Poirier could vault themselves up the title ladder with a big win. In addition, Fabricio Werdum could return to title contention with a victory over Ben Rothwell. If either Miocic or dos Santos gets injured in the lead-up to UFC 211, Werdum will almost certainly get the main event slot.

Eddie Alvarez and Dustin Poirier have one thing in common - they both got destroyed by current Lightweight champion, Conor McGregor.

Alvarez will be fighting for the first time since losing to McGregor at UFC 205, while Poirier has won 5 of his last 6 since losing to McGregor at UFC 178. Poirier is still only 28 years of age and has been looking very good since moving up to Lightweight.

Alvarez, on the other hand, will be looking to shake off the disappointment of the McGregor loss with an emphatic victory over Poirier.

This is a tremendous fight for a card that was already stacked - let's pray to the MMA gods that this card stays together, as it is absolutely fantastic on paper.
