Next Opponent For Alexander Gustafsson Remains Unknown

Stop me if you've heard this one before - Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, aka "Lil Nog", has been forced to pull out of a fight due to an injury.

Literally just days after the UFC announced that Nogueira would be taking on Alexander Gustafsson in a Light Heavyweight clash, Nogueira was forced to pull himself out of the fight due to a back injury. The fight, which was expected to headline the next United Kingdom event on March 8th, was seen as being a warm-up fight for Gustafsson in anticipation of a Gustafsson/Jones rematch in late 2014.

So, who might fill in the spot left vacant for "Lil Nog"?

There are a number of possibilities. Phil Davis and Alexander Gustafsson would be an intriguing fight, and you would also have the added wrinkle of Davis having defeated Gustafsson previously. Having said that, Davis hasn't exactly looked like a world beater in his last two fights against Lyoto Machida and Vinny Magalhaes.

Another possibility? Daniel Cormier, who just recently fought his last fight in the Heavyweight division. Cormier has announced his intentions to drop down to 205 pounds, but he has also said that he isn't interested in fighting in Europe at 205 pounds, as he wants to make sure that he has all of the weight cutting resources that he needs. Cormier had major issues cutting weight when he was an Olympic wrestler, so he is being extra cautious as he cuts down to 205 pounds.

The "safe" fight to make? Alexander Gustafsson vs Phil Davis. This would give Gustafsson an excellent shot of winning as the UFC tries to build towards a Jones vs Gustafsson rematch.

The right fight to make, in my opinion? Gustafsson vs Cormier. In order to make this happen, however, the fight will likely need to be moved to the United States.
