Mere days before he was set to board a plane to travel to the Phillipines, former Welterweight and Lightweight champion BJ Penn has reportedly revealed that he will be unable to compete at UFC Fight Night 97 due to an injury that he suffered during training.

The main event of the card was set to be a clash between Ricardo Lamas and BJ Penn. Penn was looking to make a successful return to the Octagon after wading through multiple person issues, including a nasty public battle with a former acquaintance and a six-month suspension due to banned IV usage.

The last time that we saw Penn was a couple of years ago, as he lost a bizarre fight to former Lightweight champion Frankie Edgar. Penn employed a bizarre upright stance in the fight and was thoroughly outclassed by Edgar on the feet. After the fight, Penn said that he was done with fighting, though recently revealed that he was getting the itch to compete again and would be returning to the UFC, this time under the tutelage of Greg Jackson.

There wasn't much said of Penn's training, though the former multiple title holder promised that he was feeling reborn and would show fans some of the old BJ Penn that used to dominate in the UFC.

For hardcore fans of Penn, it now appears as though they will have to wait just a bit longer to see their hero in the Octagon once again.

There is no word as to the severity of Penn's injury and when we might see him back inside of the Octagon.
