CM Punk Moves Closer To Making Professional Mixed Martial Arts Debut

According to CM Punk, who signed a contract with the UFC a number of months ago, his first fight in the UFC may come as soon as December of this year.

The UFC raised many eyebrows when they signed CM Punk, a former WWE superstar, to a contract. After all, CM Punk has zero professional fights under his belt and was just a white belt in jiu-jitsu at the time of his signing. UFC President Dana White tried to justify the signing by saying that the UFC does an unusual signing like this (Brock Lesnar, James Toney, CM Punk) every couple of years.

Dana White, at the time, pointed out the fact that the UFC took a chance on Brock Lesnar a number of years ago, despite the fact that Lesnar had just one fight under his belt at the time. Lesnar went on to become one of the UFC's biggest superstars and ended up winning (and defending) the UFC Heavyweight title.

CM Punk, however, doesn't have a tremendous wrestling base to rely on, as did Brock Lesnar. This makes Punk's transition to the UFC even more uncertain. While Lesnar could overwhelm his opponents with his raw power and wrestling, Punk will need to rely more on skill to win.

After signing with the UFC, Punk went to Roufusport in Milwaukee to train with the likes of Duke Roufus, Anthony "Showtime" Pettis and Ben Askren. There was no timetable for Punk's debut - when Duke Roufus thought that he was ready, Punk said, he would make his debut.

According to reports, Punk has looked great in training and is getting closer to starting his first camp. According to Punk himself, he is eyeing December/January/February for his debut. The UFC is also looking to put on McGregor/Aldo during that span of months, so Punk may find himself in the co-main event of the Aldo/McGregor card.

According to UFC President Dana White, CM Punk has looked "phenomenal" in training. Is this just lip service from a fight promoter, or will CM Punk actually have a chance of making an impact in the UFC?

Whatever the case may be, the first card (it will surely be a PPV) featuring CM Punk will surely do some big numbers.
