McGregor To Sit Cageside For UFC 179 Main Event

Conor McGregor has certainly never suffered from a lack of self-confidence.

McGregor, who is the Featherweight division's #9 ranked fighter, is set to battle Dustin "The Diamond" Poirier (#5) on the main card of UFC 178 this Saturday. McGregor, who has won three straight fights (Brandao, Holloway, Brimage) since entering the UFC, will enter this fight with a ton of hype behind him. McGregor is charismatic and possesses the gift of the gab, and these two things have conspired to vault McGregor into possible title contender status despite the fact that he has won just three fights in the UFC.

McGregor, as a matter of fact, is already plotting his plan of attack following his upcoming fight against Dustin Poirier. According to McGregor, the Irish superstar will be sitting cageside at UFC 179, which is set to feature Jose Aldo vs Chad Mendes in the main event.

The implication is clear - McGregor expects to beat Poirier this Saturday night (McGregor is a -275 favourite while Poirier is a +215 underdog) and then challenge the winner of Aldo/Mendes for the title.

Dustin Poirier, of course, will do his absolute best to make sure that McGregor's plan doesn't come to fruition. After all, Poirier is a tough out, having lost just twice ("The Korean Zombie", Cub Swanson) since entering the UFC back in early 2011.

McGregor has said that Poirier "doesn't impress him at all" and that "The Diamond" will be just another victim to the McGregor Express. Poirier, obviously, thinks otherwise and believes that McGregor has not yet been tested against an experienced and skilled fighter.

Assuming that McGregor does beat Poirier this Saturday night, you can be practically certain that the UFC will grant McGregor a shot at the title. After all, people want to see McGregor fight thanks to his outsized personality, and as Chael Sonnen showed us in the past, trash talking sells fights.
