UFC Will Wait For Anthony Pettis and Cain Velasquez to Return to Action

According to UFC President Dana White, interim titles will not be up for grabs in either the Lightweight or Heavyweight divisions, despite the fact that Anthony Pettis and Cain Velasquez are expected to be on the shelf until far into 2014.

Dana White explained that the UFC only uses interim titles when they are unsure as to when the champion will return to action. For instance, when former Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre blew out his knee, the UFC immediately created an interim title. In this case, they didn't know exactly when GSP would be returning to action.

In the cases of both Anthony Pettis and Cain Velasquez, the UFC knows when they will be returning to action, so they have decided not to create an interim title in either division. Anthony "Showtime" Pettis is expected to return in mid-2014, while Velasquez will likely return to the Octagon in late 2014.

While the UFC won't be creating an interim title for either the Lightweight or Heavyweight division, that doesn't mean that there won't be plenty of jostling at the top of either division.

In the Heavyweight division, Travis Browne and Josh Barnett will be squaring off on the main card of UFC 168, with the winner likely squaring off against Fabricio Werdum for a shot at Cain's title.

In the Lightweight division, Benson Henderson and Josh Thomson will be fighting at an upcoming event, with the winner likely moving on to face Anthony Pettis.
