Dana White Hypes Barao Heading Into UFC 173 Main Event

Jon "Bones" Jones? Jose Aldo? Cain Velasquez?

According to UFC President Dana White, the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world isn't any of those guys, despite the fact that UFC.com lists Jon Jones as the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

According to White, the best pound-for-pound mixed martial arts fighter in the world is Bantamweight champion Renan Barao, who will be looking to make another successful title defense this weekend when he takes on TJ Dillashaw in the main event of UFC 173.

Barao has certainly compiled an unbelievable record over the course of his MMA career, but can he be considered better than Jon Jones? That's obviously up for debate.

Barao is currently in the middle of a 32 fight winning streak that stretches all the way back to April of 2005. Barao lost the very first fight of his career and then reeled off a total of 32 straight wins (there was a no contest in there as well, where Barao's opponent was disqualified for using an illegal soccer kick).

Barao has made three successful defenses of the Bantamweight title so far, with all three wins coming via knockout. Barao submitted Michael McDonald via arm triangle and followed this up with early knockouts of Eddie Wineland and Urijah Faber.

Barao's second victory over Faber was especially impressive given Faber's surge at the time. There was a thought that Faber had improved enough to beat Barao, but Barao dismantled Faber en route to winning via first round knockout.

I think that the fact that Barao never squared off against former Bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz has hurt his standing in some people's eyes when it comes to his claim as the top P4P fighter in the world. Cruz was the unbeatable Bantamweight champion until Barao came along, but Cruz has been out the past couple of years with various injuries. If Barao had been able to beat a healthy Cruz, I would think that there would be no disputing Barao's claim as the top P4P fighter in the world.

In the eyes of many, Jon Jones is the top P4P fighter in the world thanks to his defeat of big names such as Lyoto Machida, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. However, if Barao keeps reeling off impressive wins, Jones' time at the top may be fleeting.
