Dana White Reveals Plans For New Welterweight Champion

Despite Welterweight champion Tyron Woodley's desire to fight the likes of a Nick Diaz or Georges St. Pierre, UFC President Dana White revealed earlier today that the promotion is planning on putting together a Woodley/Thompson fight next.

Stephen Thompson, following his impressive victory of Rory MacDonald, is the clear #1 contender for the Welterweight title. Things were muddied a bit, however, following the news that Georges St. Pierre plans on returning to the UFC. St. Pierre, who recently began getting tested by USADA in anticipation of a return to the Octagon, had indicated his interest in a fight with Woodley.

Following his victory over Robbie Lawler earlier in the month, Woodley called out both Nick Diaz and Georges St. Pierre. The implication was clear - Woodley, who will now collect PPV points due to becoming a champion, wanted to make a great deal of money in his next fight. Both Diaz and St. Pierre are big draws, so Woodley stands to make considerably more money if he fights one of those men. A Woodley/Thompson fight would surely be entertaining, though it won't drive the buys that a Woodley/Diaz or Woodley/GSP fight would.

The MMA King is scratching his beard and thinking about the potential fights for new champion Tyron Woodley

Dana White is adamant that Woodley will be facing Thompson next. With the UFC having recently sold for $4 billion, however, will the new owners be on board with this plan, or will they instead elect to go with a Georges St. Pierre vs Tyron Woodley fight instead? While Woodley/Thompson is the logical fight to make, Woodley/GSP is the money fight (or Woodley/Diaz, for that matter).

It will be interesting to see what kind of leverage Tyron Woodley has as he waits to hear the identity of his next opponent.
