Fabricio Werdum Will Likely Square Off Against Cain Velasquez in Mexico

Mark Hunt could have made a wide number of excuses after his loss to Fabricio Werdum last night.

The 40 pound weight cut in just three weeks. The short notice against one of the top fighters in the Heavyweight division. Personal problems. The altitude.

In the end, Mark Hunt went out and did what he always does - put on a great fight for the fans. For most of the 1 1/2 round interim title fight against Werdum, Hunt looked like the better fighter. Hunt managed to put Werdum down multiple times. Hunt managed to keep the majority of the fight on the feet, where he clearly had the advantage over Werdum.

At least, that's what we were led to believe.

Here is a fact that should have become apparent to you last night - Fabricio Werdum has transformed himself into one of the most well-rounded fighters in the Heavyweight division. Remember when Werdum was grappling and not much else? Remember Werdum lying on the ground in his fight against Alistair Overeem, begging the big man to fall into his guard because he was deathly afraid of getting into a kickboxing match against the Dutch striker?

Times have changed and Werdum has become one of the best strikers in the Heavyweight division. His flying knee last night was a thing of beauty - it totally took Hunt by surprise and won Werdum the interim Heavyweight title. Let's also not forget that Werdum bested Travis Browne and Roy Nelson on the feet as well - those two men are two of the Heavyweight division's very best strikers.

In short, Werdum has managed to transform himself and this transformation has earned him the interim Heavyweight title.

According to reports, the UFC is looking to return to Mexico in 2015. They are reportedly hoping that champion Cain Velasquez will be healthy enough to return at that time so that he can participate in a title unification fight against Fabricio Werdum.

Let's hope that Velasquez can get healthy, as Velasquez vs Werdum is looking like an even more intriguing fight now.
