Alistair Overeem Adds His Name To List of Potential Contenders

Everybody wants a shot at the UFC Heavyweight division's newly minted champion.

Fabricio Werdum defeated Cain Velasquez this past weekend to win the Heavyweight title in Mexico. Shortly after the victory, a bevy of fighters in the division called out Werdum, asking for the next shot at the title.

In addition, Werdum is on record as saying that the former champion is "deserving" of a rematch and that Werdum would have no problem fighting Velasquez in Las Vegas, where the two fighters will be less impacted by the elevation.

In addition to Velasquez possibly getting a rematch (thought this doesn't seem likely at all to me), a number of other people have indicated that they want to fight Werdum. Here is a list of the men that Werdum could potentially meet when he makes his first defense of the title:

Cain Velasquez
Stipe Miocic
Junior dos Santos
Andrei Arlovski
Alistair Overeem

Alistair Overeem added his name to the list earlier this week, as he mentioned that he has beaten Werdum before and believes that he would "figure out" the champion. Overeem, however, is well down the rankings and giving him a shot at the title seems laughable.

Andrei Arlovski is coming off of an impressive win over Travis Browne and seems to be the hardcore fan's choice for the shot. Arlovski, however, will probably get passed over for either Miocic or dos Santos.

Junior dos Santos and Miocic have both made their cases for a title shot as well. The two have already fought, however, with Junior dos Santos getting the close (and controversial) decision victory.

As we have mentioned before, dos Santos vs Werdum seems like a money fight for the UFC. There is history between the two fighters and they both hail from Brazil. It seems like the perfect fight to hold in a soccer stadium in Brazil, no?

It will be interesting to see the direction that the UFC ends up going.
