Former Strikeforce Lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez has failed a UFC 188 post-fight drug test and will be suspended for a full year.

According to the UFC, Melendez tested positive for "exogenous origin of testosterone metabolites" during a post UFC 188 drug test. In accordance with their new drug testing policies, Melendez has been suspended from competition for a full year.

Melendez was slated to face off against Al Iaquinta at UFC Fight Night San Diego on July 15th, but has now been pulled from that bout.

Melendez, in a statement released earlier today, accepted the one year suspension but made sure to mention that he didn't "inject anything". Melendez went on to say that he will be "better educated about the products" he uses and "their implications" in the future. Melendez, with his statement, is basically saying that he unknowingly ingested something (a supplement, most likely) that contained the testosterone metabolites.

Gilbert Melendez has been largely disappointing during his stint with the UFC, as he has compiled a record of 1-3, which includes losses to Benson Henderson, Anthony Pettis and Eddie Alvarez. His loss against Alvarez was particularly disappointing for his fans, as Melendez started out very strong before fading noticeably in the final round.

With his one-year suspension, Gilbert Melendez can likely now be talked about as one of the "busts" from the UFC's acquisition of Strikeforce.
