Fedor or Stipe Miocic Likely To Get Heavyweight Title Shot

The log jam at the top of the UFC's Heavyweight division is starting to clear up a bit.

There are a number of fighters who can stake a claim to a title shot against Fabricio Werdum, including Andrei Arlovski, Stipe Miocic and Junior dos Santos. In addition, Fedor Emelianenko, who recently announced that he is returning to professional mixed martial arts, may be given an immediate title shot if he is signed by the UFC.

In recent days, however, we've seen a bit of movement and the Heavyweight tangle may be starting to unwind a bit.

To start - Alistair Overeem recently revealed that he is going to wait for Junior dos Santos to get healthy instead of taking another fight. Fans have wanted to see Overeem vs dos Santos for a number of years (they have been scheduled to fight on at least two different occasions) and it looks like it might finally happen.

In addition, rumors surfaced earlier this week that Andrei Arlovski vs Frank Mir may be taking place later in the year, possibly at UFC 191. So, that bit of match-making will take Arlovski out of the title picture. Should he beat Frank Mir, however, Arlovski will certainly be up for a title shot.

Assuming that Fedor doesn't sign with the UFC, this leaves Stipe Miocic as the clear choice for the next shot at the Heavyweight title.

If the UFC does happen to sign Fedor to a deal, they are left with two choices - pit Stipe Miocic against Fedor in order to determine the #1 contender for the Heavyweight title (assuming that Fabricio Werdum wants to take some more time off, which he has indicated as such), or put Fedor in against Fabricio Werdum. If the UFC signs Fedor to a deal, they are going to pay dearly to do so, and they are almost certainly going to give Fedor an immediate title shot. They are not going to "waste" Fedor's contract on a middling Heavyweight opponent - instead, they are going to throw "The Last Emperor" straight to the wolves.

If Fedor doesn't sign with the UFC, expect to hear a Miocic vs Werdum fight announcement later in the year.
