According to multiple media reports that surfaced earlier today, Rory MacDonald will be squaring off against Hector Lombard at UFC 186. The event, which will be taking place on April 25th, will take place in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

When Robbie Lawler won the Welterweight title from Johny Hendricks in controversial fashion in late 2014, Rory MacDonald's heart must have dropped. After all, MacDonald had been promised the next shot at the Welterweight title after he destroyed Tarec Saffiedine. The UFC's best-laid plans have a way of coming undone, however, and after Lawler won the Welterweight title, the UFC immediately started distancing themselves from a possible MacDonald/Lawler fight.

Earlier this month, reports confirmed that the UFC was planning on signing a third (and probable final) bout between Robbie Lawler and Johny Hendricks. This left Rory MacDonald out in the cold - would the Canadian contender wait for his shot or take another fight in the meantime?

MacDonald decided on the latter after he agreed to fight Hector Lombard in his adopted hometown of Montreal. The chance to likely headline a card in Montreal was probably too much for MacDonald to turn down. If he beats Lombard in Montreal, there is no way that the UFC will be able to deny MacDonald any longer.

Hector Lombard, on the other hand, has won three straight fights since dropping to Welterweight in 2013. A win over MacDonald, who is one of the top fighters in the Welterweight division, would likely earn Lombard a shot at the title.

The odds for MacDonald/Lombard haven't been released as of yet but you can safely assume that MacDonald will be the comfortable favourite.

After all, Lombard has looked inconsistent during his time with the UFC while MacDonald has thoroughly demolished Tyron Woodley and Tarec Saffiedine in his last two tilts.

Another added wrinkle to the UFC 186 card in Montreal - Georges St. Pierre. St. Pierre, who may be in MacDonald's corner for the fight, will almost certainly give some indication as to his future with the promotion in the lead-up to the event.
