Henderson vs Cormier Winner Has Been Promised Shot at Title

According to Dan Henderson, one thing forced him to take the fight against Daniel Cormier this Saturday - the promise of a title shot.

After all, Henderson is just two months removed from a brutal fight against Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs Henderson 2. You certainly couldn't have faulted Henderson if he wanted to take some time off after the fight, especially given the fact that he is 43 years old.

However, the UFC dangled quite the carrot in front of Henderson's eyes in order to persuade him to take the Cormier fight at UFC 173 - the winner gets a Light Heavyweight title shot.

Now, this is probably a case of the UFC not thinking that Henderson is going to beat Cormier - after all, Henderson is 1-3 in his last four fights and a Cormier/Jones fight has been talked about for a long while. I don't think that the UFC really holds out much hope of Henderson beating Cormier, but stranger things have happened.

After all, Henderson possesses the "H-Bomb" which is capable of ending a fight with just a single punch. One well-timed punch on Cormier's jaw and the fight could be over.

Would the UFC really press ahead with a Henderson/Jones fight? It certainly sounds possible if Henderson wins tomorrow night.

Now, it's important to note that the Henderson/Cormier winner will not be getting an immediate title shot.

Instead, the Henderson/Cormier winner will be taking on the winner of Gustafsson/Jones, which is going to be taking place later in the year (barring injury). Alexander Gustafsson earned himself a rematch against Jones after he destroyed Jimi Manuwa, and the Jones/Gustafsson rematch should do tremendous numbers for the UFC.

After that, the Gustafsson/Jones winner will take on the winner of Cormier/Henderson.

There is a reason why Jon Jones recently announced that he is no longer interested in moving up to Heavyweight - there are just too many big fights awaiting him at 205.
