Hendricks Big Favourite Despite Long Layoff

The main event of UFC 181 will see Johny Hendricks attempt to defend his Welterweight title against "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler.

The two fighters have already squared off once before, with Hendricks winning the vacant Welterweight championship via unanimous decision at UFC 171. Hendricks suffered an injury and has been on the sidelines ever since, while Lawler notched victories over Jake Ellenberger and Matt Brown to climb back into title contention.

Hendricks has been inactive over the past number of months while rehabbing an injury. Lawler, on the other hand, has been very active and will be fighting for the 4th time in 2014 when he steps into the Octagon in December.

Given how close their first fight was, many are wondering if Hendricks' nine months out of the Octagon will prove to be a disadvantage for the champion.

According to the bookmakers, Hendricks is still the clear favourite to retain his title at UFC 181 - here are the current betting odds:

Johny Hendricks, -260
Robbie Lawler, +200

Given how close their first fight was, and given the fact that Hendricks has been recovering from an injury, these odds seem quite out of wack. After all, Lawler beat the very tough Matt Brown and seems to be better than ever.

In addition, Lawler and Hendricks were originally supposed to fight in 2015 but the UFC moved their tilt up a couple of months due to the injury to Chris Weidman. Will Hendricks have enough time to get prepared for this fight? It's a legitimate question that needs to be asked.

In my opinion, the rematch between Hendricks and Lawler is as close to a coin flip as you are going to get. Under ideal circumstances Hendricks would have the edge, but he is coming off of an injury and layoff and this will tighten things up considerably.
