Hendricks Decides Not To Wait For Trilogy Bout Against Robbie Lawler

UFC 185: Pettis vs dos Anjos got a shot in the arm earlier this week after it was revealed that Johny Hendricks would be taking on Matt Brown in a Welterweight tilt.

This news came as a shock to many as it was assumed that Johny Hendricks would next be squaring off against Robbie Lawler in a trilogy bout for the Welterweight title. Robbie Lawler had a very busy 2014, however, and has decided to spend some time with his family. Instead of waiting for another shot at the title, Hendricks has elected to stay busy against a very tough opponent in Matt Brown.

Both men are coming off of losses, and both of those losses came against Robbie Lawler. Matt Brown lost to Lawler in July of 2014 (unanimous decision), while Hendricks lost to Lawler in late 2014 (split decision). Both men will be looking to get back on track with a win.

The stakes are high for both men in this fight but Hendricks is risking a shot at the Welterweight title if he loses. If Hendricks loses to Brown and Rory MacDonald wins against Hector Lombard later in the year, Rory MacDonald will almost certainly get the next shot at the Welterweight title. If both Hendricks and MacDonald win, the recipient of the next title shot will probably boil down to who put on the most impressive performance in their respective tilts.

UFC 185 is looking to be another stacked card that will feature two title fights. Here is the likely main card as of this moment:

Anthony Pettis vs Rafael dos Anjos
Carla Esparza vs Joanna Jedrzejczyk
Roy Nelson vs Alistair Overeem
Johny Hendricks vs Matt Brown
Ross Pearson vs Sam Stout
