Jon Jones vs Alexander Gustafsson Rematch Put on Hold - For Now

Earlier this week, UFC President Dana White revealed that Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson will not be having an immediate rematch.

According to White, current Light Heavyweight champion Jon "Bones" Jones, fresh off of a thrilling decision victory over Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165, specifically asked to fight Glover Teixeira next. There was some talk that Jones and Gustafsson would have an immediate rematch, but that plan seems to have been scrapped.

Jones revealed earlier in the week that after re-watching his fight against Gustafsson at UFC 165, he felt as though he clearly won and that Gustafsson did not deserve an immediate rematch. Teixeira destroyed Ryan Bader earlier in the year and was promised the next shot at the Light Heavyweight title, and the UFC says that it will stick to that plan.

Alexander Gustafsson, on the other hand, will likely be fighting on a card in Sweden in early 2014.

According to the UFC, Jones vs Teixeira is being targeted for the big Super Bowl weekend card that is set to take place in New Jersey in early February of 2014. The promotion also revealed that Gustafsson will likely be fighting in Sweden around the same time.

If Jones and Gustafsson both win, the theory goes, the promotion would likely go with a Jones vs Gustafsson rematch, likely in the summer of 2014.
