Jones and Gustafsson Set To Fight on September 27th

Whatever issues the two sides had have now been ironed out as Jon "Bones" Jones has agreed to square off against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 178 on September 27th. The card will be taking place at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, which was also the site of their first battle last year.

Jon Jones had seemingly been hesitant to fight Gustafsson again, as he had indicated a willingness to fight against Daniel Cormier instead. UFC President Dana White had repeatedly stressed that Gustafsson was, in fact, the number one contender and would be fighting for the title next. This is what is going to happen, as Jones has now agreed to fight Gustafsson on the 27th of September.

According to Jones, the entire situation was a misunderstanding. The Light Heavyweight champion said that one of his brothers is getting married in July and he didn't want to start a training camp until after the event. The UFC had initially been planning to have Jones fight against in August but the promotion has agreed to push the fight back a couple of months.

Gustafsson, for his part, now has his rematch. Gustafsson earned himself another shot at the Light Heavyweight title after defeating Jimi Manuwa earlier in the year.

So, with Gustafsson and Jones now fighting in September, this leaves Cormier without a fight.

According to the former Strikeforce Heavyweight champion, he has no plans of fighting again until he can take on the winner of Gustafsson/Jones. A number of different "stay busy" fights have been mentioned for Cormier, including Rashad Evans, but Daniel is not interested.

Cormier runs the risk of sitting on the shelf for a REALLY long time if Gustafsson wins on September 27th, as the UFC would likely be very tempted to host a trilogy fight immediately. That is the risk that you run when you wait for a title shot.

Jones/Gustafsson II should do big business for the UFC as Gustafsson very nearly beat Jones the first time that they fought.
