Josh Barnett vs Frank Mir Set For UFC 164 Co-Main Event

At UFC 36, Josh Barnett defeated Randy Couture to win the UFC's Heavyweight title.

At the time, Barnett seemed destined for superstardom - a young, charismatic fighter who has now the Heavyweight champion of the world.

Unfortunately for Barnett, his spot at the top of the MMA world was quickly taken away from him after he tested positive for three banned substances. His Heavyweight title was stripped and he was exiled from the UFC, seemingly forever.

This was back in March of 2002. Since that time, Barnett has fought in a number of different promotions, including Affliction, PRIDE and Strikeforce, against the likes of Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Daniel Cormier. Barnett was seemingly happy to fight outside of the UFC, but with Affliction going under and PRIDE and Strikeforce being swallowed up by the UFC, his options dwindled quickly.

Earlier this year, the seemingly impossible happened - the UFC and Barnett agreed to a deal. At first it appeared as though it wouldn't happen, as Barnett initially declined the first offer from the UFC, but eventually the two sides were able to work things out.

The UFC decided to throw Barnett right into the deep end of the pool, as he will be fighting former UFC Heavyweight champion Frank Mir in his first fight. This is a fight that many hardcore MMA fans have been requesting for a while, and they will finally get their wish this Saturday night at UFC 164: Pettis vs Henderson 2.

Josh Barnett is a welcome addition to a thin Heavyweight division, and I can't wait to see how he does during his second stint in the UFC.
