Dos Santos Outclasses Rothwell Over Five Round Fight

The main event of this evening's UFC Fight Night card in Zagreb, Croatia saw former Heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos take on Ben Rothwell.

Heading into this fight, dos Santos and Rothwell were seemingly heading in two very different directions. Rothwell was fresh off of impressive wins over Josh Barnett and Matt Mitrione, while dos Santos was looking to rebound following a loss to Alistair Overeem.

Many people wondered if Junior dos Santos had been irreparably harmed following two lopsided defeats against Cain Velasquez. Dos Santos answered those questions tonight after he bruised and battered Ben Rothwell over the course of their five round tilt to earn an unanimous decision victory.

The win for Dos Santos was so impressive, in fact, that many people feel as though he may have earned the next shot at the Heavyweight title with his victory. There are other men who could claim title shots as well with impressive victories (Cain Velasquez, Alistair Overeem), though dos Santos has certainly propelled himself into the title picture, at the very least.

At UFC 198 next month, Fabricio Werdum will be taking on Stipe Miocic for the Heavyweight title.

Regardless of who wins this fight, Junior dos Santos, who will likely be the #2 or #3 ranked Heavyweight fighter following his demolition of Ben Rothwell, will have a compelling claim to the next title shot.

After all, dos Santos can claim victories over both Werdum and Stipe Miocic, which is something that no other Heavyweight fighter can claim. Who can forget Junior's electrifying knockout victory over Fabricio Werdum at UFC 90 in October of 2008?

If Cain Velasquez absolutely destroys Travis Browne at UFC 200 in July, I can see the UFC giving him the next title shot, as Cain is very big in the important Mexican market and was originally supposed to fight Werdum earlier this year. If anything else takes place, you can likely count on Dos Santos getting the next title shot.
