Machida No Match For Former Strikeforce Champion

A former Strikeforce champion (Luke Rockhold) demolished a former UFC champion (Lyoto Machida) in the main event of UFC on Fox 15 earlier tonight. Rockhold's win was so impressive that he may have set himself up as the next in line to get the shot at the winner of Vitor Belfort vs Chris Weidman.

Luke Rockhold promised that he would defeat Machida and he easily delivered on that promise. Rockhold bruised and battered "The Dragon", especially on the ground during the second half of the first round. Rockhold seemed to break Machida during the first round and easily finished him off in the second via a rear-naked choke. Rockhold was too big and too strong for Machida, and the "Dragon" just didn't have anything to offer the former Strikeforce champion.

Heading into tonight's fight, Lyoto Machida was the second ranked fighter in the UFC's Middleweight division while Rockhold was the fourth ranked fighter.

Rockhold's performance was so impressive that many people are calling for him to get the next shot at the title. Jacare Souza, who also won on tonight's card, is standing in his way, however, as Souza is currently the #1 ranked fighter.

In terms of strength of opponent, Rockhold may have earned himself the next shot at the title. Jacare Souza beat Chris Camozzi tonight, who was filled in for an injured Yoel Romero. Rockhold, on the other hand, destroyed a former UFC champion.

There is the possibility, of course, that the winner of Weidman/Belfort get injured and will be unable to defend the title for a period of time. If that takes place, the natural assumption is that Luke Rockhold will be taking on Jacare Souza for the next shot at the title.

While there is some uncertainty in the top of the Middleweight title picture, one thing is for sure - there are going to be some great fights in the months ahead.
