UFC 173: Weidman vs Belfort To Take Place on May 24th, 2014

The UFC has three annual cards that tend to be very big - their Super Bowl weekend card, their Memorial Day weekend card and their July 4th weekend card.

This year's Memorial Day card is going to be a big one, as the UFC has already signed two big fights for this event - Chris Weidman vs Vitor Belfort for the Middleweight title, as well as Chael Sonnen vs Wanderlei Silva in a Light Heavyweight bout. Weidman/Belfort will be the main event, while Sonnen/Silva will serve as the co-main event.

Chris Weidman is the defending Middleweight champion, as he was the man to finally topple Anderson "The Spider" Silva. Following a successful title defense against the "Spider", Weidman turned his attention towards Vitor Belfort, who is the clear #1 contender in the division after demolishing the likes of Dan Henderson and Michael "The Count" Bisping. Belfort has been on an absolute tear as of late - this fight should be a beauty.

Chael Sonnen vs Wanderlei Silva, on the other hand, should be a very interesting fight with absolutely no title implications. Sonnen and Silva legitimately despise each other, and that hatred is being ramped up on the latest season of the Ultimate Fighter: Brazil. Sonnen and Silva are coaching opposite each other, and they have reportedly already gotten into a fight. Their rivalry goes back years, and it will be interesting to see how this fight ends up playing out.


Weidman vs Belfort is likely the biggest fight that the UFC can put on right now with Georges St. Pierre and Anderson Silva out of the line-up. Throw in Sonnen vs Silva for good measure, and you have one of the biggest cards of the year.
