Kampann Is "Burnt Out", Needs Time Off

Martin "The Hitman" Kampmann long dreamed of a fight with former UFC Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre.

Well, much like GSP, Martin Kampmann has said that he is stepping away from the Octagon for an indefinite period of time. The reason? Kampmann says that he is "a little burned out right now" and that he needs some time away from fighting to recharge his gas tank.

Is Kampmann retiring? According to the 31 year-old fighter, he's not calling it quits - instead, he's simply taking a break.

Kampmann's desire for some time off is completely understandable when you look at his last four fights - hellacious contests against Carlos Condit, Johny Hendricks, Jake Ellenberger and Thiago Alves. Aside from the Hendricks fight (where he was knocked out inside of a minute)., Kampmann has engaged in absolute wars - wars that would drain even the toughest of fighters. Kampmann says that he has had his "fair share of concussions", and that jumping back into the Octagon right away would be a bad decision.

Kampmann is making a smart decision here - he has been fighting for well over a decade, and many of his fights were all-out wars. He is still a young man, and he could easily still have 4-5 good years of fighting left in him even if he decided to take a year or two off. Rushing back into the Octagon, only to lose his third fight in a row, doesn't seem like the best career decision for "The Hitman".

In addition, with the Welterweight division in a tremendous state of turmoil right now, sitting out to see how things shake out would not be the worst move in the world. A rejuvenated Kampmann could quickly gain a title shot if he returns to his old form.

Kampmann currently has a professional record as a mixed martial artist of 20-7-0, with 8 of his victories coming via knockout. Kampmann came within one win of receiving a title shot twice - once he lost to Jake Shields (just barely), and the other time he was quickly knocked out by Johny Hendricks.
