Gegard Mousasi and Jacare Souza Will Both Be Free Agents After This Weekend

Two title contenders in their respective divisions - Gegard Mousasi and Jacare Souza - will be free agents following the completion of UFC on Fox: Johnson vs Reis this weekend.

Gegard Mousasi is technically a free agent right now, as his fight against Chris Weidman was the last on his deal. Mousasi has been very outspoken about his contract as of late, as he has openly wondered why he is getting paid so little compared to the likes of Mark Hunt and others. Mousasi seems to be fairly confident that he will ink a new deal with the UFC, as he says that he is on good terms with UFC President Dana White.

Jacare Souza is also set to fight out his contract this weekend when he takes on Robert Whittaker. Souza has been upset about his place in the Middleweight division, as he feels as though he keeps getting passed over for title shots. Souza has won 10 of his last 11 fights, with most of those wins coming in the UFC.

The King is discussing the potential of two fighters ending up as free agents. Mousasi and Souza are the ones in question.

If Souza beats Whittaker this weekend, the UFC runs the very real risk of having two bonafide title contenders entering free agency.

The UFC always inserts a clause in their fighter contracts that allows them the opportunity to match other offers. Don't be surprised if both Mousasi and Souza (especially Souza, as I could see Mousasi and the UFC coming to terms on their own) use Bellator to increase their leverage with the UFC. Bellator has managed to sign a couple of former UFC fighters as of late, and there is no doubt that they would love to get their hands on both Mousasi and Souza.

In the end, I think that Mousasi will almost certainly stay in the UFC, while Souza might depart for Bellator. Souza would do himself a great favour financially if he posted an impressive victory over Whittaker this weekend, as it would make it much harder for the UFC to let him go.
