Diaz Takes To Twitter To Make His Request

Earlier today, former Lightweight title contender Nate Diaz took to Twitter to request a release from the UFC. Here is what he said:

"@ufc @danawhite I would like to request to be released from the @ufc Its time for me to be on my way .. ?"

Nate Diaz is currently under contract to the UFC and it seems extremely unlikely that the UFC would grant his request. My guess is that Diaz saw the deal that his training partner Gilbert Melendez recently received and decided that he wanted to test the free agent waters, likely hoping for a lucrative offer from Bellator.

As far as I know, Diaz still has a number of fights left on his contract, and he is likely going to have to complete his existing deal or never fight again.

Nate's release request adds to what has been a somewhat bizarre week on the Diaz front.

Earlier in the week, Nate's brother Nick did an interview in which he said that he was only interested in fighting for the title if he decided to come back to the UFC. Nick's last two fights have been for the title, but he has somehow come to the conclusion that he is the #1 contender based on his ability to draw PPV buys. Nick Diaz pointed to the buys from his fight against Georges St. Pierre as proof of his drawing power.

Nick and Nate's training partner and friend, Gilbert Melendez, signed an offer with Bellator earlier in the month that the UFC ended up matching. The deal was reportedly a very generous one, and it seems likely that the Diaz brothers see themselves as being under-compensated by the UFC. It's likely because of the Melendez deal that Nick and Nate Diaz are all of a sudden being very vocal with their unhappiness.

What will the UFC do with Nate Diaz? Is he serious about his request to be released? One thing you can say for the Diaz brothers is that there is never a dull moment with them.
