Can Davis Talk His Way Into a Fight With The Champion?

According to Phil Davis, three things are going to happen on Saturday night at UFC 172:

1) Jon Jones will retain his Light Heavyweight title
2) Davis will beat Anthony Johnson
3) Davis will challenge Jones for the title

Phil Davis seems to be using the Chael Sonnen method of getting the next title shot - he is trying to talk his way into it.

Today’s UFC 172 press conference was another example of that, as Davis constantly attacked and belittled the Light Heavyweight champion. UFC President Dana White seemed to find the act amusing as Davis went on the attack. Jones, on the other hand, was less than amused, offering that Davis should instead be focused on Anthony Johnson.

There is a logjam in the Light Heavyweight division right now and Davis is trying his best to get to the top of it. Davis has likely (correctly) figured that even with an impressive win on Saturday night, he is likely the third in line for a shot at the title behind Daniel Cormier and Alexander Gustafsson. Gustafsson has been promised a shot at the winner of Teixeira/Jones, but nothing is a lock when it comes to promised title shots.

Davis seems to be taking the "why not?" approach. Why not taunt Jon Jones and try to get under his skin? Maybe Jones will be so irritated by Davis that he will ask the UFC for a fight against Davis.

This is a win/win situation for Davis - either he gets a shot at Jon Jones or his profile gets elevated due to his trash talking.
