Raphael Assuncao Faces Tough Test as He Attempts To Rebound From Injury

According to multiple media reports, Urijah Faber has agreed to square off against Raphael Assuncao in the main event of a UFC Fight Night card that is set to take place in March in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Raphael Assuncao was originally rumored to be getting the next shot at TJ Dillashaw and the Bantamweight title but had to pull out due to an injury. The title shot was eventually given to Renan Barao after both Dominick Cruz and Assuncao went down with injury.

Assuncao and Faber have squared off once before, with Faber winning via submission in January of 2010.

Urijah Faber is currently on a two fight winning streak (Francisco Rivera, Alex Caceres) and is hoping to move closer to yet another shot at the title. As has been pointed out before, Faber is undefeated in non-title matches at Bantamweight. Faber keeps moving through the ranks to earn title shots but keeps on losing the big fights when the title is on the line. Faber is hoping to earn himself a fourth shot at the title. The interesting wrinkle, however, is that close friend and teammate, TJ Dillashaw, is currently holding the Bantamweight title and Faber has shown an aversion to fighting him.

Raphael Assuncao, on the other hand, is currently riding a long 7 fight win streak that has included wins over TJ Dillshaw and Vaughan Lee. As mentioned, Assuncao was being mentioned for a title shot following his win over Bryan Caraway in October of 2014 but was forced to pull out due to injury. With Renan Barao having already taken the title shot, Assuncao will be forced to keep winning in order to maintain his standing in the division.

Faber vs Assuncao II will be a five round bout that will serve as the main event of UFC Fight Night: Rio de Janeiro in March.
