Daniel Cormier's First Title Defense May Occur in October

According to MMAJunkie.com (link below), Daniel Cormier's first expected title defense against Alexander Gustafsson will likely be pushed back due to a lingering knee injury for the champion.

According to reports, Cormier vs Gustafsson had been "tentatively" pencilled in for UFC 191 in September. The UFC had held off of officially announcing the bout, however, after Cormier indicated that he might not be ready for September.

MMAJunkie, via an unnamed source, stated that there has been a "slight delay" in the planned fight due to Cormier's injury. The new date for the Cormier/Gustafsson fight has not been revealed as of yet, though UFC officials believe that it may take place as early as October.

Daniel Cormier defeated Anthony "Rumble" Johnson earlier in the year to win the Light Heavyweight title. This match came about after the UFC elected to strip Jon "Bones" Jones of his title following a hit and run incident. Jones, who may be facing jail time as a result of the incident, is likely going to be out of commission for a long while. In fact, there is a chance that Jones has fought his last fight in the UFC.

Alexander Gustafsson was given the next shot at the Light Heavyweight title despite getting crushed by Anthony Johnson in his last fight. The UFC likely gave Gustafsson the shot over Ryan Bader (who had been actively campaigning for the fight) for a number of reasons, including his international popularity, his propensity to stage exciting fights and his FOTY against Jon Jones in 2013. There is no doubt whatsoever that Cormier/Gustafsson will be a more exciting fight than Bader/Cormier.

In short, Cormier/Gustafsson is coming, though a bit later than previously expected.
