Lawler vs Hendricks Likely for End of Year

Robbie Lawler defeated Matt "The Immortal" Brown last evening to earn another shot at Welterweight champion Johny Hendricks. Hendricks, who is currently recovering from an injury, is expected to be healthy later in the year, which is when Lawler is expected to get his shot at the title.

Lawler and Matt Brown engaged in the type of fight that everybody was expecting - a stand-up war that left both fighters exhausted and bloodied. In the end, however, it was Lawler who prevailed, as he was able to turn up the heat in the closing rounds of the fight. Many people had been expecting a finish, but this just spoke to the iron chins that both Lawler and Brown possess.

Robbie Lawler will now be taking some much needed time off as he waits for Johny Hendricks to recover from injury. Lawler has fought three times since March 15th, notching victories over Jake Ellenberger and Matt Brown, while losing to Johny Hendricks.

The first Lawler/Hendricks fight has been one of the best fights of the year so far, with Lawler and Hendricks engaging in an absolute standup war. There is no reason to think that their second tilt will be anything different.

The big question mark in the second Lawler/Hendricks fight will be ring rust. Hendricks will likely be at least nine months removed from his last fight when he next steps into the Octagon, and that's assuming that his recovery goes as expected. There is a chance that Hendricks may have a year between fights when he finally steps into the Octagon against Lawler.

Lawler, on the other hand, has tremendous momentum right now. A win for Lawler over Hendricks would conclude a tremendous career resurrection for "Ruthless" Robbie, as he was essentially forgotten following his loss to Lorenz Larkin in Strikeforce's final days.
