MacDonald Opines That St. Pierre Is Likely Not Interesting In Another Title Run

Welterweight contender Rory MacDonald, fresh off of an impressive performance against Tarec Saffiedine, recently appeared on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast.

Given that Rory MacDonald and Georges St. Pierre are training partners and friends, Joe Rogan naturally had to ask the question of what might be next for the former Welterweight champion, Georges St. Pierre.

According to MacDonald, if St. Pierre does return to the UFC, chances are that he will be participating in "superfights" rather than attempting another run at the title.

This makes sense given that MacDonald has earned himself a shot at the winner of Johny Hendricks and Robbie Lawler. UFC President Dana White has stated that St. Pierre would be given a title shot immediately upon his return, should he want one. St. Pierre, according to practically everybody around him, is a super loyal guy so it's hard to imagine that he would barge in front of his friend and teammate to get an immediate shot at the title.

It's even harder to imagine, for that matter, that St. Pierre would be willing to fight his friend for the title, should he choose to return and should MacDonald win the belt.

Superfights make a great deal of sense for St. Pierre, especially given the fact that he has blown out both of his knees over the past couple of years. The UFC can throw him into fights whenever he is healthy and both sides will make tons of money. St. Pierre has spoken at great length about the pressures of being a UFC champion and this strategy of engaging in superfights would certainly alleviate a great deal of stress for GSP.

There are a number of intriguing possibilities for superfights involving GSP, including a long rumored fight between himself and Anderson Silva. With Silva possibly looking to take the superfight route as well, we may just get the mega-fight between Silva and St. Pierre.
