Rory MacDonald Set To Challenge For Welterweight Title

UFC 189: McGregor vs Aldo added another title fight earlier today after the UFC announced that Rory MacDonald will be taking on Robbie Lawler for the Welterweight title.

Rory MacDonald had originally been promised the next shot at the Welterweight title following his destruction of Tarec Saffiedine. The plans, however, seemed to change after Robbie Lawler eked out a win over Johny Hendricks to win the Welterweight title. Many people felt that Hendricks won the fight and that he deserved an immediate rematch.

It seemed as though the UFC would be heading in this direction after they revealed that Rory MacDonald would be fighting Hector Lombard at UFC 186 in Montreal. These plans changed, however, after Lombard tested positive for steroids. Instead of booking another fight for MacDonald, the UFC elected to pull him off of the card entirely.

Earlier today, the UFC revealed that MacDonald would be taking on Lawler in the co-main event of UFC 189 in July. This will be a rematch of the terrific fight from UFC 167 which saw Lawler win via split decision. Lawler went on to lose to Johny Hendricks after that fight.

Rory MacDonald has been attempting to land a shot at the Welterweight title for a number of years now. He has come very close to earning a shot at the title (the first fight against Lawler was a #1 title contender eliminator contest) in the past but has never been able to advance to the big fight - until now. It also helps, of course, that good friend and training partner, Georges St. Pierre, is no longer in the Welterweight division (or the UFC for that matter) as MacDonald has long contended that he would be very hesitant to fight GSP.

Robbie Lawler, on the other hand, will be looking to make his first successful Welterweight title defense since beating Johny Hendricks in late 2014.

This should be a fantastic fight!
