Nelson Departs From UFC Following Long Run

According to Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com (link below), Roy "Big Country" Nelson has inked a multi-year deal with Bellator.

If the reports are true, this means that Bellator has landed yet another big "name" from the UFC, as Rory MacDonald, Ryan Bader and Ben Henderson have also joined Bellator in recent years.

Nelson has been slumping as of yet, as he has gone 2-5 in his last 7 fights. Nelson's contract had expired with the UFC, and the promotion was likely not very interested in retaining Nelson's talents. Of course, it certainly doesn't help that Nelson and Dana White have clashed multiple times over the years.

The King is reading the news in old school fashion. By reading from a piece of paper.Roy Nelson employs a "stand and bang" philosophy to fighting that has helped him to become a fan favourite over the years.

Unfortunately for Nelson, however, some of the dynamite seems to have left his hands, and this has led to Nelson finding himself on the losing side of the ledger more often than not as of late.

Having said that, Nelson is more than capable of providing competitive and entertaining fights, and bouts against Matt Mitrione and Fedor Emelianenko seem like likely possibilities going forward.

This is a move that makes sense for all three sides - the UFC, Nelson and Bellator. The UFC cuts an underperforming thorn in the side of Dana White, Bellator gets a big name for their Heavyweight division and Nelson likely gets some very nice paydays.

Win/win/win.
