Main Event Marred By Early Stoppage

UFC 170 had some very exciting fights, but the event ended up being marred by some inconsistent refereeing from Herb Dean, who is generally regarded as one of the best refs in the business.

Ronda Rousey quickly dispatched of the game Sara McMann in the main event, but many felt as though Dean stopped the fight too early. Rousey levelled McMann with a knee to the liver, crumpling her opponent to the mat. Rousey rushed in with punches and Dean stopped the fight. McMann bounced back to her feet moments later and was seemingly good to continue.

Rousey was clearly in control of the fight and almost certainly would have won, but Dean seemingly erred in calling the fight so fast, as McMann had apparently recovered after the shot to her liver.

In the co-main event, Daniel Cormier easily dispatched of Patrick Cummins in just a little over a minute. Despite the best attempts of the UFC to make this seem like a competitive fight (the UFC told us over and over again that Cummins had once made Cormier cry during practice), the final result was a one-sided thrashing of Cummins. This fight didn't really do much for Cormier, aside from proving to the world that he can make the cut to 205. Cormier will move sideways in the division as a result of this win, while Cummins will likely get at least one more fight after stepping in on such short notice.

The most interesting fight of the night was between Demian Maia and Rory MacDonald. Both fighters desperately needed wins, and MacDonald was able to pull out the decision victory after dropping the first round. For MacDonald, this was a gutsy victory that got him back into the good graces of Dana White and the UFC. The Welterweight division is now wide open, and I would expect MacDonald to get the winner of Condit/Woodley, with the winner of that fight likely getting a title shot.

All in all, this event was pretty forgettable. Fortunately for mixed martial arts fans, there are a number of strong events coming over the next couple of months.
