Cormier Wants To Fight Rather Than Wait For Title Shot

Shortly after UFC Fight Night: Gustafsson vs Manuwa concluded, UFC President Dana White confirmed that Gustafsson would be fighting the winner of Jon Jones/Glover Teixeira, who will be squaring off in the main event of UFC 172.

Jon Jones didn't seem to be too hyped about those plans, as he instead suggested that Gustafsson and Cormier square off for the #1 contender spot.

According to reports, the UFC isn't interested in going that route (assuming that Jones wins), as they surely want to cash in on what will be a lucrative Gustafsson/Jones rematch.

So, the future seems pretty certain for Alexander Gustafsson - he will be getting the next shot at the Light Heavyweight title.

HOWEVER, if Jones happened to lose to Teixeira, these plans could change quickly, as the UFC would likely want to give Jones an immediate rematch against Teixeira, especially if the fight ended in a controversial manner.

Assuming nothing wacky happens, Gustafsson will likely square off against Jon Jones in the fall of 2014.

What about Daniel Cormier?

Dana White was recently asked about Daniel Cormier, and he said (via Twitter) that Cormier will get the winner of Jones/Glover vs Gustafsson. However, that fight would be a long way off (likely early 2015), and Cormier isn't the type of fighter who likes to wait.

Instead, Cormier will likely end up fighting the winner of Phil Davis vs Anthony Johnson, with the winner getting the shot at the Light Heavyweight title.

There was talk of Jon Jones cleaning out the Light Heavyweight division, but a new crop of competitors have surfaced that will likely keep him busy for a long while.
