Win or Lose, Conor's Next Fight Likely For Title

On Saturday evening in Las Vegas, Nevada, Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz will square off for the second time in the main event of UFC 202.

The stakes are extremely high for both men in this fight. A loss for McGregor will likely significantly diminish his drawing power in the UFC, while a win for Diaz will continue to elevate his profile and may earn him a shot at the Lightweight title.

A win for McGregor, on the other hand, will open up an entire range of possibilities for the Irish superstar.

Let's look at what might be next for Conor McGregor based on the possible outcomes on Saturday night:

-

A loss for Conor McGregor.

If McGregor loses to Nate Diaz on Saturday night, I would imagine that McGregor will come to the conclusion that fighting at a higher weight class is just not working for him. If Diaz wins, you can pretty safely assume that McGregor will drop back down to 145 pounds to defend his title against Jose Aldo later in the year, possibly in the main event of UFC 205 in New York.

I don't see any other outcome if McGregor loses, barring some sort of controversial finish on Saturday night.

A win for Conor McGregor.

If McGregor wins on Saturday night, I would expect him to immediately challenge for a title, which was his plan all along.

I would expect a call out of Lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez if McGregor defeats Nate Diaz. In addition, I would expect McGregor to formally drop the Featherweight title if this happens, as I highly doubt that he would ever fight at 145 pounds again with a victory on Saturday night.

Some other potential, less likely possibilities - a fight with Georges St. Pierre (this was likely the plan if McGregor had defeated Diaz at UFC 196) or a potential Welterweight title fight against Tyron Woodley.

The King, while having his hands behind is back, is sitting in his office chair contemplating Conor McGregors next move leading up to the fight vs. Nick Diaz at UFC 202

In the end, I believe that McGregor's next fight will be for a title - either against Jose Aldo or Eddie Alvarez.
